Memphis Public Library celebrates National Library Week with donor GP

The Memphis Library Foundation (MLF) announced Georgia Pacific Memphis Cellulose (GP) as this year’s Corporate Volunteer at the Memphis Public Library & Information Center’s (MPLIC) annual Volunteer Appreciation event on Sunday, April 10. This event helped kick off National Library Week, a celebration of how libraries transform.

“GP is headquartered in Atlanta, but has given its full support as a community partner transforming Memphis,” said MLF Executive Director Diane Jalfon.

Last year at this time, GP donated $25,000 toward transforming teens through CLOUD901. “Innovative projects such as CLOUD901 leverages education and entrepreneurial activities to help enrich our community,” said Chuck LaPorte, GP Memphis Cellulose mill manager. “We anticipated the project would create long-term value by encouraging the use of hands-on activities and critical thinking skills that stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math in dynamic and fun ways and we’ve been impressed so far.”

In recent years, through the GP Foundation, the Memphis Cellulose mill and the nearby GP Cellulose Technology & Innovation Center have donated approximately $300,000 to local charitable organizations that support education, community enrichment, entrepreneurship and the environment.
