Made-in-Memphis film nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards

Drama Free in Deed, written and directed by Jake Mahaffy, has been nominated for four Independent Spirit awards. It is nominated for the John Cassavetes Award for the best feature made for under $500,000; best cinematography; best male lead and best supporting female. 

The movie, which was filmed in Memphis debuted at the Indie Memphis Film Festival and will open theatrically in Memphis on December 9th. The Independent Spirit Awards ceremony will take place the day before the Academy Awards, on Feb. 25 on IFC. 

According to the website, the film’s synopsis is:
“Set in the distinctive world of storefront churches, and based on actual events, Free in Deed depicts one man’s attempts to perform a miracle. When a single mother brings her young boy to church for healing, this lonely pentecostal minister is forced to confront the seemingly incurable illness of the child… and his own demons as well. The more he prays, the more things seem to spiral out of his control.”
