What it is: Sandusky Library is in the midst of what Executive Director Molly Carver calls a “complete exterior envelope restoration” of the library, which includes the former Erie County Jail, and its Follett House Museum.

In an email, she says the total cost of the original project was about $2.4 million, with roughly $1.1 million coming from grants and private foundations; the rest is covered by the library’s general fund for capital maintenance.

The Follett House Museum dates back to the 1830s.

Why it’s important: It became apparent in recent years that issues with the buildings needed to be addressed, Carver says in a video the library recently posted to YouTube.

“The buildings are old. The library is 120 years old,” she says. “Follett House dates from the 1830s.”

The original study of condition for budgeting purposes was done “several years ago” and updated in 2021 after contracting an architect, she says in the email. The primary contractor, Louisville, Ohio-based Coon Restoration & Sealants, began preparing the site for work in October 2021, with work beginning in the spring.

“The things that we build today – they’re not as decorative as these old buildings,” says Coon’s Aaron Michael in the video. “It’s an art that’s gotten lost, and I think that it’s important to keep the beauty of these old buildings.”

Construction on the library is expected to come in at about $2.4 million.

The project has grown a bit from its conception, Carver says.

“An expanded scope of work is necessary for the (library’s) roof and Follett House north staircase, which is being planned for 2023 with an estimated completion of the total project in mid-2023,” she says in the email.

“The community will continue to have welcoming public spaces to enjoy in the library and museum,” she continues. “Future generations will inherit three beautiful and significant historic properties that are well maintained.”
