"It warms the heart to be able to serve in this community and be able to give back to these young ladies in the same way that someone gave me this opportunity."
Downtown Memphis needed a positive image makeover in the 1970s. So, Jake Schorr reached far into the city's past and launched a horse and carriage company. Decades later, his carriages are a staple on Downtown streets and are loved by tourists and residents.
Memphis children may face a deficit in reading comprehension if they are unengaged during the summer months. Literacy Mid-South volunteers help Memphis children steer clear of the summer slump.
"If we follow our Boys Squad rules, we'll be great men in life." Those are the words of 12-year-old Courtney, leader of the Whitehaven Boys Squad. The young men meet weekly at the Whitehaven Library to learn, set goals, and practice their secret handshake.
"I've always given back to the community, listened to the people. Because the people are very important. And it paid off." That's why they call Ms. Hazel Moore the "Mayor of Whitehaven." It's a title she earned after years of community service.
"The Orange Mound community is like a family, a close-knit family, handed down from one generation to the other." The Orange Mound Community Service Center is a homebase for many of Orange Mound's seniors. You are guaranteed to find some wonderful characters who believe in their history, the community and the future.
"If you put good stuff in, what's going to come out of you? Good stuff." Landmark Training Development Company in Orange Mound offers a food pantry and farmers market to residents. Volunteers at the nonprofit tend to the gardens and serve the community with fresh vegetables and herbs.
"I know that this stadium has been the focal point of not only football games but entertainment in Orange Mound. And when we have games, you can look for the community to come out in full force," said Shirley Collins, a longtime resident of Orange Mound.
Located at 575 Suzette, a warehouse maintained by Advance Memphis hums with activity. Residents of ZIP 38126 can walk to work to fulfill short-term contracts or use the warehouse as a space to incubate their own businesses.
