Nyla Davison tagged along on a Model D photo shoot that her father, Kahn Davison, was working on. She filmed a social media reel about what it took to create our story about women in Detroit leading changes in hip-hop music, interviewing the journalist and keenly observing the process.
For the second cohort of Voices of Youth, we sat down with nearly a dozen Detroit teenagers who shared with us their thoughts on what community is and what (as "solutions-oriented journalists") they would like the world to understand about the city where they learn and love.
“Our primary focus is to develop these young people at their core internally so they can achieve success externally," says Summerjoy Scott, Leader of LEAD Academy, a career development initiative from For the Kingdom in Memphis' Raleigh community.
"International Paper’s generosity over the years has helped us think bigger and has led to a 61 percent increase in youth literacy program attendance from 2021 to 2022," says Christine Weinreich.
Sandusky High School Samarion Newell is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio's 2023 Youth of the Year.
Support networks for breastfeeding parents are helping more little Michiganders get their best start in life.
The youth-led, eastside Detroit organization, Detroit Heals Detroit, opened a healing hub for youth who have experienced trauma. It’s a safe environment to process the stressors young people of color face, with programming designed by youth and for youth.
“We’re proud to boast strong alliances with our community partners, such as the BlueCross Foundation, who have strengthened our efforts to better serve our residents,” said Dexter Washington, CEO of the Memphis Housing Authority. “The resources that partners contribute, coupled with the affordable housing we provide, empower our people and communities.”
CCYT will settle in at the renovated Sandusky State Theatre upon its reopening.
