Model D spent time with youth from three different Detroit neighborhoods, listening to what they love about their communities and what they hope to change, capturing their words in insightful sketches. Now, our youngest residents will get a chance to report to you.

High school junior Ileana Sartor grapples with the emotions that come with being a girl in a male-dominated sport. Sartor is one of four Sandusky High School females who are a part of the first SHS girls’ wrestling team.
“This opportunity can make the difference for educators and students as they incorporate 21st-century skills and real-world problem-solving. It is a privilege to work with this partnership year after year and continue to serve the incredible educators of the Tennessee Valley,” says Gretchen Brown, operations director at Battelle.
“As a graduate of an HBCU, I understand how valuable these particular institutions are for developing young people so that they are able to return to the City of Memphis and make a lasting, positive impact in their community,” says Memphis City Council Chairman Martavius Jones.
A recent collaboration is working to address the many challenges faced by medically fragile foster children, who may live with chronic disorders or developmental disabilities.
When she was 12 years old, Alejandra Gomez, started participating in afterschool activities in Southwest Detroit at United Neighborhood Initiatives. Today she leads afterschool and out-of-school programming for the agency, bringing creativity, heart and expertise to her work with young people.
The DPSCD Farm-to-School initiative increases the amounts of locally grown fruits, vegetables, and legumes used in school breakfasts and lunches.
“We seek to help minority youth become the person they see in their dreams and realize their potential,” says Greg Winston, founder of the Memphis-based CLAY nonprofit organization.
