The Heights

The Heights is a collection of neighborhoods — Highland Heights, Mitchell Heights, Graham Heights, and others — located roughly between Tillman and Graham Streets to the east and west and Jackson and Summer Avenues to the north and south. It’s predominantly working class with modest homes, young families, and many senior residents. The area was first developed in the early 1900s and boomed as Summer Avenue grew into a major Memphis thoroughfare. Today it’s one of the most ethnically diverse areas the city, with business owners and families from more than 30 different countries.  Join us for our in-depth coverage of The Heights from September to December 2018.

The state’s only dual-language program grows with Memphis’ Latino population

Several of Treadwell Elementary’s dual-language immersion classes are at or near capacity. Supporters say side-by-side English and Spanish instruction builds skills and cross-cultural connections, and the program is critical to future success in one of Memphis’ most diverse neighborhoods.

"Having a greenline and a bike trail in the middle of National Street is a way to bring two sides of the community together.” The Heights Line is a proposed two-mile median park space on National Street in the Heights area of Memphis. Developers plan to use the existing median, a holdover from when the trolley cut through The Heights, and turn into a park space and a walking/bike path that connects the community to the Broad Avenue Hampline and the Wolf River Greenway.
