Video: The blues return to Club Paradise
B.B. King, Aretha Franklin and Isaac Hayes have all called Club Paradise home. Opened in South Memphis in the 1960s, the building shuttered in 1999. It opened last year under new management, and supporters believe the new Club Paradise could lead the way to community growth and good times.
Club Paradise opened in the 1960s as a premier location for blues and entertainment. The building’s history is what draws most of its fame. Internationally acclaimed artists as B.B. King, Aretha Franklin and Isaac Hayes all played there. Many have called Club Paradise the Carnegie Hall of Blues and Soul.
Music.
In 1999 the club shut down and the building sat vacant for many years. In 2016 new owners purchased the building and began hosting events again at the original location at 645 East Georgia Avenue in South Memphis. The 42,000-square-foot building is a multi-purpose facility that will host concerts, conferences, community events, corporate meetings, family reunions and weddings as well as religious services.
This video was shot during an event in May of 2017. The attendees took a trip down memory lane as our cameras captured video of modern artist TK Soul, the opening act for R&B artist Latimore.
