New mural project brightens up downtown buildings

What’s happening: Six vinyl murals are slated to be installed in locations around downtown Sandusky. The vinyl mural program was developed by the city of Sandusky’s Public Arts and Culture Commission. The program structure was inspired by the “Six in the Short North” mural series in Columbus, Ohio, according to Sandusky’s Chief Planner Arin Blair.
What it is: The murals will vary in size, but will typically be about 10 feet by 15 feet. Two of the projects have been installed on East Water Street and the remaining four will be installed in the spring. “Each mural will be displayed in highly visible locations downtown,” says Blair. “In addition to all the building owners enthusiastically supporting the program, the Landmarks Commission also approved all the prospective locations that are located within the Downtown Historic District.”
Why it’s important: “The Public Arts and Culture Commission considers the addition of murals to be the highest importance public art improvement today to contribute to the vibrancy of the city,” says Blair.
