Porter-Leath is enrolling preschool students for 2021-22 and temporarily waving application fees

Porter-Leath is currently enrolling preschool students across five Memphis locations for the 2021-22 school year. For a limited time, they’re also waiving the $50 application fee.

For the 2021-2022 academic year, preschool students need to be between two and four years old by August 15, 2021.

“High-quality early childhood education has an incredible long-term impact on a child’s success not just in Kindergarten but throughout their lives,” said Dr. Kelley Nichols, Porter-Leath’s vice president of early childhood services.

“Porter-Leath Preschool provides opportunities for children to learn in ways that interest them, building a positive association with learning. As teachers introduce new vocabulary during activities or ask thought-provoking questions, children develop a curiosity for life and a drive to learn that extends beyond the classroom.”

Parents and guardians can stop by any of the preschool sites, no appointment needed, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. They’re also hosting application hours at all locations from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 31. Caregivers can also start the application process here.

The centers are located in Frayser, Parkway Village, Cottonwood, and South Memphis.

 Early Ed Matters
Preschool and pre-K teach core academic skills and teach the social skills that ensure a child is kindergarten ready, and a student’s success in kindergarten can impact their entire learning career

Porter-Leath’s preschool programs also offer wraparound services to students and their families during their preschool years.

Porter-Leath is a partner organization with First 8, which is a sort of hub for all things early education in Memphis. First 8 lists 12 partners on its website who are providing pre-K for 4 year olds in Shelby County. Many offer year-round enrollment and wraparound services, and they all offer free pre-K to families who meet certain income requirements.

Porter-Leath’s pre-K program includes:

  • Individualized early childhood development resources
  • Health and developmental screenings, including speech, hearing, vision, and lead exposure
  • Medical, dental, and mental health services
  • Parental involvement and education
  • Nutritional counseling
  • In-home family support and counseling
