The Memphis chapter of Green Drinks celebrates its launch on October 21 with the first of ongoing free monthly social gatherings at Alchemy in the Cooper-Young area of Midtown.

“The founders of this group believe that Memphians care about the environment, and there a lot of great environmental stories in Memphis – from Shelby Farms to Project Greenprint and all of the great work that the City of Memphis and Shelby County are doing,” says Rosenthal, Memphis Green Drinks co-founder and International Paper (IP) Sustainability Project Leader.

Memphis chapter co-founder Dermot Murray, FedEx Sustainability Business Strategy Manager, had the idea to bring together a casual group of eco-conscious people to talk about local issues and hear more about hot local “green” projects from knowledgeable guest speakers.

Murray and Matthew Hawks, FedEx Express Manager of Hub Operations, contacted Rosenthal because of their similar roles at their respective companies, and the trio formed Memphis Green Drinks.

The first meeting on Oct. 21 will feature John Zeanah, Administrator with the Memphis-Shelby County Office of Sustainability and leader of the Greenprint project, and subsequent meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of every month at Alchemy, a Project Green Fork restaurant.

“For future meetings, we’re hoping to bring in speakers from Project Green Fork and the Wolf River Conservancy,” says Rosenthal, who handles environmental and social reporting for IP. “This is really about giving people a forum to talk about issues that they are passionate about.”

Green Drinks was founded in London in 1989 and has grown to span 669 cities around the world.
