Office of Sustainability seeks volunteers to plant rain gardens

After the success of the Low Impact Development Design Competition last year, the Office of Sustainability, Shelby County Engineering, and TN American Society of Landscape Architects (TNASLA) have partnered to create 4 rain gardens on either side of the Peggy W. Edmiston Administration Building entrance. This grant funded project will alleviate some of the drainage issues at the building by filtering and infiltrating the stormwater runoff from the roofs and create a beautiful amenity for employees and citizens to enjoy.
They are currently seeking 40 volunteers to help with the installation of the rain garden. TNASLA members will design the rain gardens and oversee installation, Shelby Co Engineering will prepare the ground, and the Office of Sustainability will offer multiple educational sessions to homeowners throughout the year. But, they need assistance planting the plants. No prior knowledge of rain gardens or native plants needed according to the Office of Sustainability, just a willingness to help. It is, however, suggested that if you own gardening gloves or shovels that you bring them along.
