What is it: The Chubby’s family just grew by one. The two locations–Chubby Bargain Bins and Chubby Liquidations, both in the Sandusky Plaza on Cleveland Road–now are joined by Chubby’s Mercantile, just two storefronts down in both directions. The third storefront opened in February.

Owners Marcy Payne LaVigne and Timothy LaVigne opened Chubby Bargain Bins, its first location, in August 2022. Previous to that, Marcy operated a t-shirt company out of their home called Chubby Couture.

The duo sold their home in Columbus to move back to the area. Marcy grew up in Perkins Township, while Timothy lived in Norwalk.

“We decided to open the business after falling in love with the concept and liquidation, and we wanted to bring it to our hometown,” Timothy says.

Why is it important: Chubby’s is able to bring these deep discounts to shoppers because many items returned to stores are never used, but once they are returned, they do not get put back on the shelves, Timothy says. Chubby’s offers items like Amazon products, toys, small appliances, name-brand clothing, and shoes.

“The expansion first allows us to bring in name-brand clothing from major department store liquidations, from Nike at $30 a pair to clothing at $5 a shirt,” Timothy says. “We even have name-brand jeans for $10, most new with tags. These are just returns and overstock from these stores.”

That isn’t all that the expansion has brought to Chubby’s customers. Shoppers can now purchase laminate flooring for 50 percent off the retail price, and Timothy says they hope to bring in vinyl flooring for a similar cost. They’ll also bring in freezers, lighting, and more.

“The business and growth is exciting to us and we love that we can help the community fight inflation with items that are half the retail price,” Timothy says.

As the Chubby’s name continues to grow in both size and merchandise, Timothy says they want to keep doing what they love and sharing that with their customers and loved ones.

“We hope to keep expanding and adding more items,” Timothy says. “We also would love to thank our landlord, as none of this would be possible without him, plus our family and the community for all of the support. Without them the growth of Chubby’s would not be possible.”
