Downtown movie theatre plans moving forward
A building permit was filed this week, signaling the planned movie theatre at Central Station in the South Main Arts District will become a reality.
Malco Theaters filed the $6.5 million building permit application for the seven-screen movie theatre at 45 E. G.E. Patterson St., with a new box office and bar in the existing Powerhouse. The permit also included a rooftop seating area.
The project is part of the overall $55 million redevelopment of Central Station led by the Henry Turley Co. and Community Capital. The vision for the project includes transforming the 17-acre site into a multi-use Downtown hub. Components of the proposed plan include a the movie theater, boutique hotel, grocery store, around two hundred more apartments, restaurant and retail offerings, as well as significant civic improvements.
The developers have been working on the plan since MATA put out a Request for Proposal around two years ago.
